Netflix Review
No. of Movie Titles: 100,000 plus Membership Costs: A choice of 4 packages, each with first month half price:
Not only did Netflix pretty much pioneer the whole online DVD rental rodeo, it's been consistently one of the most popular and highly regarded exponent of it ever since. These days Netflix is big, real big, with over 8 million members across the continental United States, and it's still growing fast. That makes one of the most popular online DVD rental service in America, and possibly the world. That may be because the range of movies and TV shows you can rent is huge, it may be because the value on offer is one of the best you'll find (unless you're willing to shop around and pay for slightly lower prices with poor choice or slow delivery), it may be because its customer service is rated as friendly and accessible, but our guess is that at least part of the reason is its continuing commitment to finding innovative new ways of being the best at what it does. Its recent addition of an instant movie download service demonstrates this. The website itself is clearly laid out and makes it real easy to join up and pick the movies you want to see, there are even reviews to help you choose (these could maybe be longer, but this is not a problem as movie reviews are widely available on the net from any number of sources). Whilst you could argue the website lacks the whistles and bells found on some other rental sites, everything you need is here, and it's easy to find too. The features it does have are useful features rather than just there to make the website look more shiny. For a start there are all the neat features designed to help you select films, such as a system which allows friends who are members of Netflix to send each other recommendations of films they've enjoyed. Additionally, Netflix lets you set up your kids with an account which limits the movies they are allowed to order to restrict their exposure to violence, nudity and cuss words. If you're on vacation you can even "pause" your account so you won't be billed whilst you're unable to watch any movies. The basic service works pretty much like many of the other DVD rental sites listed in this category. You create a list of DVDs you want, ranking them in order of priority. However many DVDs your package allows you to have at once are then sent to you by mail. When you're done watching them you just pop them in the pre-paid return mailer. Upon receipt, Netflix will mail you the next batch of DVDs from your list. And delivery is fast. Netflix have a policy of mailing you the next batch of DVDs as soon as they get the previous one back, and because they mail from over 100 shipping points nationwide 95% of them should reach you the very next day. With most online rental operations you have to take into account how close you are to their depot (usually in California or the northeast) when estimating arrival times, not so with Netflix. Of course, their service is only ever as reliable as the US mail service, but there's not much Netflix can do about that (a few online rental services have experimented with delivery by registered courier over a limited area, but this proved expensive and impractical). Very occasionally, an obscure title may need to be shipped from further away than your local distribution center and thus take a little longer, but this is rare. Even so, if you just don't want to wait for the mailman there's already over 10,000 movies you can download to your PC and watch right now. All you need to make this work is a decent connection speed and Windows Vista or XP. Better yet, all but the cheapest subscription plans let you download as many hours of movies and TV episodes as you want as part of the membership package - there's no extra cost. Sure, this is a smaller selection than you can get by mail, but 10,000 DVDs is still a heck of a lot (can YOU name that many movies?). Try putting an obscure title into their search engine to see if you can catch them out! It's not easy. The range of titles alone demonstrates that Netflix is so much more comprehensive than even the largest DVD store could ever be, offering a choice of over 100,000 titles (and rising) including Blu-Ray discs. The choice of packages available allows for all appetites. This makes Netflix the ideal way to catch up on all those films you're supposed to see before you die - no need to feel dumb anymore when the topic of conversation turns to whether The "Seven Samurai" or "Yojimbo" is Kurosuwa's finest film (clue: it's the Seven Samurai) or clamp your hands over your ears because someone's about to give away the twist at the end of "the Sixth Sense" or "the Usual Suspects", which you honestly meant to see but never quite got around to. Be prepared to discover hidden gems such as Joss "Buffy" Whedon's mighty sci-fi/western cult classic, "Serenity". Or why not compare versions of the classics - is Whale's version or Branagh's your first among Frankensteins? Is Lee or Lugosi the definitive Dracula? Or, like me, you could just wallow in your lack of cinematic refinement and settle down to watch "The Rock " for the 18th time with corn chips and a favorite beverage. Netflix allows you to do any or all of these so cheaply and conveniently you may never again leave the house (consider this a warning). A whole world of film awaits inside your mailbox! Review Update: As of February 2009, Netflix has dropped from our No. 1 position down to No. 2 on our list because of their (frankly) appalling customer support. We've personally tried to get in touch with Netflix numerous times by email (using various different email addresses) and by using their online contact form, and we are still waiting for a reply. If they won't respond to us, what makes you think they'll respond to you if something goes awry? We still think they offer a great service, however as one of the most popular DVD rental companies in the US we are totally perplexed by their total lack of communication!
