Editor's Verdict:

GreenCine (apparently its pronounced “Green Scene”) is the leading rental provider of eclectic, obscure and international cinema – art house and indie as well as Animal House and Indy. Not that you can’t rent “Psycho Cop Killer Cop 2: The Final Cop Out” if you really want to, but that’s not the point. The rental operation itself is only one aspect of the (very nicely revamped) website, which provides an engaging and highly browsable wealth of reviews, features and articles about movies, old and new. It’s a fun place to spend an hour or two and you may even learn something you didn’t know.

Because GreenCine is all about cultivating a love of films, and in particular of films you might not otherwise get to see, rather than making money per se, its rates (mainly for their higher-end packages) are slightly more pricey than some of the market leaders but this allows you access to films that Netflix or Blockbuster could never provide. Also a portion of GreenCine’s revenue goes towards encouraging and promoting the work of independent filmmakers. There is also no free trial as such, but GreenCine does occasionally run promotional offers which subscribers can take advantage of. As a relatively small operation, GreenCine prides itself on its standards of customer service and on personally responding to message board posts and emails rather than sending out a standardized reply.

The service itself works much like many of the other DVD rental sites listed in this category. You create a list of DVDs you want and however many DVDs your package allows you to have at once are sent to you by post. When you're done watching them, you just pop them in the pre-paid return envelope. As soon as they receive your returned DVDs they'll mail you your next batch of DVDs from your list. Because the speed of the US Mail service cannot always be relied upon, GreenCine runs a clever “quick returns” system through which you let them know, via the website, when you’ve mailed your DVDs back to them so they can get the next batch in the mail to you without having to wait for the returning DVDs to arrive. Shipping generally takes 1-3 days if you live on the West Coast or 2-4 days elsewhere in the country, as GreenCine is based in Southern California (formerly San Francisco but lately Van Nuys). Unlike many competitors they do ship on Saturdays. If that’s still not quick enough you can also download movies from their website, although this is charged separately rather than as part of the rental package as with some companies (generally $4.99 per movie, which allows you to watch it as many times as you want over a 10 day period).

GreenCine may not be quite a cheap as our other top picks, but it's not about that, it's about being part of a community which supports new and independent filmmaking, and GreenCine’s reputation for customer care and being passionate about their products reflects that.
