Editor's Verdict:

Never been too sure what’s so futuristic and cybery about spelling your web address badly. It means that if you want to check out the website you don’t just have to remember the name you have to remember how it's mis-spelt too (how many x's and z's?). However, once you get to GameznFlix.com the overall look of it is very slick and easy on the eye with a cool sounding slogan: “life without pause”. Except when you think about it that doesn’t make any sense – you CAN pause DVDs and games, its life you can’t pause (unless you’ve figured out how to do this, in which case be sure and let me know how).

A lot of work has clearly gone into last year’s redesign of the website: smartly laid out in green, gray and black, it incorporates loads of neat extras, such as a podcast and blog for gamers. There are also GameznFlix mugs, clothes and memorabilia on offer, suggesting that this is a brand the owners are planning to build into a long term, large scale concern, which is reassuring if you plan to sign up with them. Another nice touch is the savings calculator which works out how much money you could save with GameznFlix depending on how many movies and games you get through each month and how far you live from your local rental store. GameznFlix also runs various special offers open to members and a discount scheme for members of the armed forces. All clever stuff.

There are a couple of annoying aspects to the website, however. For one thing the actual details of the packages are relatively inaccessible and the information offered about how the service works rather basic - it doesn’t even tell you much about the free trial – in place of an FAQ list there is a webform. Also you seem to need to sign up and log in to use many of the features of the website, making it difficult to get an idea of how good they are before you actually take the plunge, so it doesn’t exactly make visitors who may eventually decide to join feel welcome. On the plus side, unlike some of its competitors, GameznFlix does offer a customer support phone helpline to resolve any problems rather than just an email address.

Their three subscription schemes are actually cheaper than the equivalent packages offered by most of our top 10 choices and allow you to rent any combination of games and movies without charging you more for the games, as some of these other sites tend to do. A downside is that some customer feedback suggests that as an all-rounder GameznFlix are sometimes not so good at quickly sending you the latest or most popular releases compared to their competitors who specialize in one or the other. Maintaining an inventory capable of satisfying gamers is notoriously problematic anyway, as new titles are apt to be in huge demand for a few months and then quickly go out of fashion, even the consoles themselves becoming obsolete after a couple of years. No wonder so few online services still try to provide both DVD and game rental.

The system itself works much like many of the other DVD rental sites listed in this category. You create a list of DVDs (and games, in this case ) you want and however many your package allows you to have at once are sent to you by post. When you're done watching them, you just pop them in the pre-paid return envelope. As soon as they receive your returned DVDs and/or games they'll mail you another batch from your list. Shipping generally takes 2-5 days, depending partially on how close to live to their growing list of distribution centers. GameznFlix has also made some forays into the movie download market, but as yet has nothing to compare with Netflix’s range of 10,000 titles you can download and watch right now on your PC.

Nevertheless, if gaming as well as DVD rental is important to you then GameznFlix may well be worth looking at, especially given the rock-bottom prices on offer.
