DVD Avenue is a smallish, but growing, DVD rental service which has dared to take on the might of Netflix and Blockbuster and, to its credit, is making some headway. But it still has a way to go. The website layout is clear and easy to use, if rather…. yellow. There are several neat features to this website to help you pick DVDs for your list, including personal recommendations and a list of experts who can tell you which DVDs are worth checking out and which you should avoid. A lot of effort seems to have gone into developing the reviews and search engine pages but other parts of the website sometimes look a bit sparse, such as the page describing the four different rental packages available, which at least makes choosing one of them very straightforward. These all offer unlimited monthly rentals, the only difference being how many discs you are allowed at once, though the value for money isn’t quite as good as that offered by our number one choice. Another mark against DVD Avenue is that they aren’t currently running free trials offers, something most other websites generally do.

That said, in the couple of years it's been around DVD Avenue has already earned a reputation for professionalism and good customer service. The system itself is flexible and well-thought-out. Handily, if you go on vacation you can even suspend the service for up to two months so you won’t have to pay while you’re unable to watch any movies.

Be warned: there is another online rental service with a similar name, DVDAvenue.tv, a DVD sales (not rental) site which has sometimes been mired in accusations of illegal practices. Whether these allegations are founded or not, this site should not be confused with DVDAvenue.com, which is a completely unrelated company and entirely legitimate (so far as we can tell).

The service works much like many of the other DVD rental sites listed in this category. You create a list of DVDs you want and however many DVDs your package allows you to have at once are sent to you by post. When you're done watching them, you just pop them in the pre-paid return envelope. As soon as they receive your returned DVDs they'll mail you your next batch of DVDs from your list. Shipping turnaround times for DVD Avenue are reputed to be a little slower than for Netflix and Blockbuster, but deliveries tend to be quicker if you live anywhere near Maryland, where DVD Avenue ship from .

All in all, DVD Avenue offer a perfectly decent online rental service which, as yet, does not quite rank up there in the big leagues.
