Editor's Verdict: Obviously, Anime takeout is no ordinary DVD rental operation - it is a leading specialized in bringing you the latest and best Anime and Manga entertainment from Japan, the home of stylized animation, futuristic ultra-violence and characters with comically large eyes. If you're new to this kind of thing, the difference between the two is that Anime means animated movies and Manga refers to graphic novels (yes, that means comic-books bound as full-length novels rather than sold as flimsy monthly issues). Anime Takeout is unique amongst the DVD rental operations we've looked at in also renting out graphic novels, which is a nice idea, although these are liable to wear out much more quickly than DVDs what with continual mailing and being repeatedly leafed through by different manganese customers across the country. The website is clearly laid out and has a clever set of search options to help you find the right movies for you, which includes an availability-meter to tell you how long you're likely to wait to see a popular film and a choice of "maturity rating". This exists to take into account the tendency of Anime to include extreme violence as well as dark, disturbing adult themes (also nudity and sex, although Anime Takeout doesn't stock "Hentai", which is essentially Anime hardcore PORN!). Whilst there are anime aimed at younger viewers (and usually at selling things to younger viewers), some of which you may even have seen on cable over here, these cartoons are not always for kids! Be warned: Anime isn't The Peanuts Christmas Special featuring Charlie Brown and Snoopy, unless of course Charlie Brown and Snoopy are robot ninjas living in a post-apocalyptic wasteland ruled by giant amoebas from space that suck out your eyeballs through your face. It's not for the faint hearted. Having said that, Anime isn't all apocalyptic eyeball-sucking fun, it also deals with any number of salient social issues as well as comedy and romance and actually provides a fascinating window into the national psyche of the Japanese (and, obviously, that of giant space amoebas). All of life is here, and much of death too. Anime is a strange world where the narrative conventions and storytelling language of western cinema mean nothing. Handily, given that customers might not be as familiar with the DVDs on offer as they would be with those stocked by mainstream rental providers, the website provides a detailed idea of what you can expect from each title in their inventory. The prices their packages offer are a little higher than most of the big DVD rental providers, but then this is a niche market with its own price scale and stock that has had to be specially imported halfway across the world. The service itself works much like many of the other DVD rental sites listed in this category. You create a list of DVDs and graphic novels you want and however many your package allows you to have at once are sent to you by post. When you're done watching them, you just pop them in the pre-paid return envelope. As soon as they receive your returned DVDs/comic books they'll mail you your next batch from your list. Delivery speed will depend partly on how close you live to Anime Takeout's depot in Pasadena, California (though its not all sunny for Californians because, as with other DVD rental services, they have to pay an extra 8.5% sales tax on all rentals). Because the speed of the US Mail service cannot always be relied upon, Anime Takeout runs a clever “quick returns” system through which you let them know, via the website, when you’ve mailed your DVDs back to them so they can get the next batch in the mail to you without having to wait for the returning DVDs to arrive. So, if you've heard of Manga but thought it was a fruit or heard your friends discussing "Annie May" but assumed they were talking about a cousin of theirs from the deep south, prepare to have your eyes opened (and possibly sucked out). Anime is a whole new world, and very much a love-it or hate-it experience. For first timers its probably best to rent a bit of Anime elsewhere first before you sign up for this all-you-can-eat buffet, because Anime Takeout isn't going to rent you Alvin and The Chipmunks instead if you decide this stuff isn't to your taste. An acquired taste, then, but if you do happen to acquire it Anime Takeout may just be the Manga management system for you.
